The Batman | Key Art

It’s no simple task to deliver an entirely new take on one of the world’s most popular—and most adapted—superheroes, but writer/director Matt Reeves did exactly that with 2022’s The Batman. HIs gritty, cinematic vision for The Dark Knight employed anamorphic lenses and shallow depth of field to evoke not only the scope and scale of Gotham, but an intimate, tense, even claustrophobic atmosphere.

Dozens of initial comps with varying styles, color palettes, and compositions were presented from the studio’s agency partner, and systematically pared down until a clear direction emerged. Every detail of that design was then tweaked and finessed to match the film’s look and feel, and to subtly convey how the scope, scale, and visual drama of The Batman is amplified on IMAX screens.
